  I wanted to post this to remind you that while this blog is still "active" I am not actively maintaining it.  If you have questions about the patterns housed here (or about anything on this blog) please direct comments to me on www.ravelry.com

Although I no longer offer free patterns, I continue to answer questions about these items.  You can pose a question as a comment on the project page, or send me a (private) message from the first link.

If you have questions about the free vintage patterns that are found on pomoboho.blogspot.com, I am happy to answer these questions, though these patterns may not have a pattern page on ravelry.  The best method is to send me a message directly, through ravelry.com (my ravelry name is pomoboho).  We don't have to be "friends" for you to do this, but friend me if you like!

Have you booked your place at the 2011 Maritime Spinners Retreat?

Mimi and I just did.

This year's Retreat is being hosted by Gaspereau Valley Fibres & The Potluck Spinners; it promises to be a real treat. The theme this year is 'Spin Local'. At last year's closing banquet is was suggested that the theme is really going to be Spin Local, Drink Local but I'm not sure that anyone else will remember that...it was a jolly evening!

2010's Retreat was themed 'Spin Wild!" focusing on wild fibre and art yarns so no surprise, I had a great time. Last year's PEI hostesses Louise and Elaine are packing along their feathers and we three will still be spinning slightly off kilter this year (I know I can't help it). We hope you'll join us, especially with the event (at Old Orchard, Greenwich NS) being so close to Halifax.

Here are some fun moments from last year:

Games included forcing 'straight-laced' spinners to spin a single blindfolded...and it was a race!

I bought a lot from our fellow vendors...The Loop made money that weekend, but I spent a lot of mine.
Mimi and I taught mini sessions playing upon our wild theme; Knitting Without a Map and Freeform Crochet.
On Day 2, fully into the swing of things, we were encouraged to wear wild outfits...luckily I had brought my Noro Tutu. Oops, I guess I never blogged that project.

We had a great time as vendors. Hope to see you in the valley this year!

Event Updates

Time for an Update, I should think.

The Loop is holding a fundraiser for Haiti Disaster Relief. Knitters are invited to donate yarn from their stash and then to come in and buy from someone else's stash this weekend ( January 23rd and 24th) Proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Disaster Relief Fund. We've been receiving great stuff. There will be a raffle, advice for donations, and general good feelings.
Non-Knitters are invited too. "Darning for Dollars" will be on all weekend to help mend your worn out woolens. Your $10 donation will help mend overseas. Bring in your holey socks or snagged sweaters for us to fix...we can teach you to mend as well! Gentlemen and Needle-phobics encouraged.
I think it should be good fun and promote warm feelings in and out.

While there, check on two upcoming classes; Intro to Crochet and an Amigurumi Crochet Workshop.
I am trying something new with the Intro Class. Project orientated classes always work best and I've tried many different patterns in the past. I'm now going with a Sampler Scarf. Most of the Stitch Patterns are comprised of cleverly placed single crochets and I, myself was shocked with the many textures and patterns that came about with just a little experimentation.
It's a great exercise for any crocheter and frankly, nothing beats a Sampler.

The Amigurumi class is one we've never run as a workshop so it will be fun to see how many different animals and characters we can produce round the table.


I'm also lending my hook to the Lunchtime Enrichment Program at Le Marchant St Thomas.
Parents please note:
Sessions are every Tuesday lunch starting February 2.
Materials will be provided, but favorite colours and bits and pieces from home are welcome. We will be crocheting, but will also try spinning our own wool! Kids will be able to produce results after the first lesson and will learn about where the yarn we use comes from.

As in previous years a blog has been created to recap each session as it takes place and to cover any new techniques we learn. Each technique will be videotaped from the Crocheter's perspective for easy translation to hands. Although there is no 'homework' for this program, students will be able to use the blog to perfect any tricky stitches or catch up from home.
This blog will be private, uses no names, and the web address will be given to each student (along with this web address) at the first session.

I am always available here at my personal blog for questions or concerns; just leave a comment (these are private). I may also be tracked down at The Loop at 1547 Barrington St on Thursdays and Sundays. We'd love to see you...maybe someone else in the family is a bit of a yarnie, or would like to revamp their skills?

I haven't been able to knit, crochet or spin for some months now because of a problem with my hands, but I think that when I am able, a Tyrolean Jacket will be my first project.

Updates

Here are some goings on that have gone on this autumn.

Late September The Loop tended booth again at Pacafiesta, Halifax's Fibre Show and Alpaca love-in. It proved as strange and endearing as ever. I fell for a Schacht loom, and lost my heart to many pairs of bedroom eyes. Here are some friends...

Soon after came Nocturne, Halifax's first annual art at night festival. I packed up my spinning wheel (a Louet Victoria) and joined Mimi and Karla in the Loop window. Our living art installation kicked up good moods on busy Barrington St along with merry kinetic energy, luring people inside where Cathy hosted a charity knit a thon. At the end of October, fellow Victoria spinner Mimi and I headed up to Cape Breton's Gaelic College for the Maritime Spinner's Retreat. Tanya has a great post-retreat write up here.
I learned lots about my new craft, but I may have come away with more questions than answers. That's a good situation though, happily sequestered as I am in novice land.
